Wonder Valley resident, artist and curator, Deborah Tobin met a group of WV artists early last Saturday morning at the Community Center to ferry their artwork to the Beatnik Lounge in Joshua Tree. The theme of the show was Liminality : Doors, Portals, and Thresholds.

The Ring

I kinda can't believe it took me this long to post this. I saw it while I was driving around on the Highway 62 Art Tour last weekend. It's north of Amboy. I saw it from a distance and was drawn to it. What a lovely and surprising effort out in the middle of nowhere. Many thanks to whoever constructed this delightful artwork.

DEHSART - a radical approach to dumping

I expect people will have many different responses to this, but I do like the way they at least stop and think about what "waste" means in the desert.

Engaged and Inspired: DEHSART
"Because the high desert is a vast and wide area, it cannot be policed for illegal dumping as frequently as it may be desired; but Nickel and Newman don't think their communities have to settle for that. Recently, the two were awarded a Task Force Grant, which helps them fund their community projects. In its third year, the Task Force Grant has helped fund many similar initiatives to stop illegal dumping the Antelope Valley and other high desert areas. The Antelope Valley Illegal Dumping Task Force Group was also created in light of these problems; it acts as a forum for people to talk to the government, offers resources for community members, and helps fund education about and prevention of illegal dumping. Where's Heather?

Wonder Valley's own artist, Heather Johnson, is riding her motorcycle to the other end of the Americas. She's made it as far as Girón, Santander, Columbia.

 From Heather:
Girón. I spent a single night in this colonial suburb of a much bigger city, in an enormous and beautiful 200-year-old hotel room that looked expensive enough to make me feel guilty about staying there (though it cost around $19). It had a balcony made of ancient stained beams from which I could gaze down at people passing by under the street lights that night. — in Girón, Santander.

Wonder Valley rainbow

Wonder Valley artist, Kiki Seror, an instructor at Copper Mountain College, caught this rainbow over the Buillon Mountains the other day. Kiki teaches art and photography.

Wonder Valley murals

Cathy Allen, an art instructor at Copper Mountain College, organized a mural tour of Wonder Valley last Sunday after brunch at the Palms. I missed it and am so hoping she does another.

The artist is Mear One. The video below has mature language, probably not safe for work. Lovely job they did sprucing up the desert in Wonder Valley.
